James D. Downing

James David Downing, 78, formerly of Waterloo, died Dec. 23 at Maple Crest Nursing Home in Fayette of cancer.

Memorial services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at Conger Street Church of God, 1050 Conger St., Waterloo, with a luncheon following.

He was born Sept. 12, 1939, in Luling, Texas, son of H.W. and Dorothy MacDonald Downing. He married Ingegerd Elfberg on Dec. 22, 1956.

James painted tractors for John Deere, and worked part-time as a spray painter at Pope Manufacturing. He was a union steward at John Deere, president of the Northeast Iowa 4-wheel Drive Jeep Club and a member of the CB Club.

Survived by: his ex-wife; two sons, Daniel (Maria) and James, both of Waterloo; two daughters, Gwendy Julien of Fayette and Kia (Kevin) Lundgren of Sioux City; 12 grandchildren, Kelly Hein, Rachel Carter-Shadle, Kristi Maness, Jesse Stock, Allison Taylor, Daniel Downing, Leah Downing, Noah Downing, Sean Shull, Roxanne Dubuc, Heidi Johnson and Abby Johnson; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dwain of Arlington, Texas; and a sister, Caroline Neuman of Katy, Texas.

Preceded in death by: his father; his mother; his stepmother, Pearl; and a granddaughter, Yvonne Johnson.
